The Struggles And Benefits Of Being A Poet

Becoming involved in poetry always starts as a love for the art. The complete appreciation for the nature of expression and the images one could display through their work. When my life became involved in poetry it was totally for the enjoyment of telling the world how I felt, no matter who read. Since my initial introduction, much has not changed, I still love to express myself, I still want the world to hear me, and I still could careless if I touch one or one million.

Fortunately, for the poetic industry, people usually do not involve themselves in the art to make boat loads of money. It's not in the industry, of course there are our noteworthy spotlight poets, but as an artist you have to recognize that you will NOT be #1 seller of all time. This is great because it filters those who would sellout their skills just to make money.

The struggle with this world is becoming heard. I have noticed a lot of poet peers do not take well to well written work, its a subliminal hate. I have observed that maybe a one or two word comment could be said about work I feel is amazing. I let a person who enjoys reading poetry read it, and they go crazy. Not saying that ALL my peers don't favor my work, but I can sense the some that don't. Who can blame them, if another artist is trying to get on a radio spotlight, magazine, or feature they have less time to focus on what's great about your work.

Making a name: Okay, you're a poet. Now what? How do you become understood and well-favored? Join poetry sites, poetry groups, read, send mass emails, and even contests. You want to be heard, you want the exposure, even though you want do it for the love of the art, I'm sure there is part of you that wants to be seen (read).

What works in being a poet. You get to have fun with words!! Say whatever you like, poetry does not equal love writings. I write about obscure, abnormal and random occurrences. It feels great, a soul flush and purge of the mind.

So, as long as you know you will not make your complete living off poetry and that some people won't grasp your concept. Just keep writing, have fun and do it for your enjoyment and it will take you much further.
